【Reflection】
This program focused on the challenges and prospects for
achieving a stable energy supply and carbon neutrality toward
2050. Chairman Kido of the Petroleum Association of Japan
(PAJ) opened the session by addressing the organizers,
explaining the role of petroleum in Japan and the
industry's efforts and challenges toward carbon
neutrality. The following discussion featured Yasushi Sekine,
Suzu Yamanouchi, and Keio University students Seika Maruyama
and Nao Egashira. Moderated by Enokido, the session discussed
the future of society and energy based on the students'
presentations.
Maruyama gave a presentation titled "Marine Environmental
Issues and Energy Issues." She explained that the
bleaching and death of coral reefs due to global warming has a
significant impact on marine biodiversity, fisheries, tourism,
and disaster prevention functions. She also mentioned the
serious marine plastic problem, highlighting the need for
societal implementation of petroleum-derived plastic recycling
technology.
Egashira gave a presentation on the theme of "Energy
Potential in Sparsely Populated Areas," proposing
measures such as the introduction of microgrids and small
mobility vehicles, as well as building improvements, in
sparsely populated areas, where the amount of energy used per
person for transportation and heating is high, resulting in
significant energy costs and environmental impact.
The two students' presentations and the subsequent
discussions reaffirmed the need for continuous learning and
collaboration between industry, academia, and government to
overcome challenges and build a sustainable society. The
awareness of the issues among the younger generation sparked
lively discussions, providing an opportunity to think together
about the future of society and energy.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Going forward, we will continue to disseminate information
about the oil industry's efforts toward stable energy
supplies and carbon neutrality so that it can be shared with
the entire society, including consumers.
