The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition (hereinafter referred to as “the Association”) is pleased to announce the sponsor for synthetic fuels, part of the Future Society Showcase Project “Green Expo” at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “the Expo”).
The Association is still in discussions with a number of companies and organisations for each of the “Future Society Showcase Project Exhibitions,” and will announce new sponsors and organizations in due course.
*Green Expo: This project is part of the Future Society Showcase Project, which aims to realise future society by incorporating advanced technologies and systems at the Expo site as a showcase of the future society. It will realise cutting-edge technologies and visions of the future related to decarbonisation and resource circulation.
Project Overview
Demonstration of heavy-duty vehicle operation using synthetic fuel produced at the demonstration plant, etc.
Sponsor
ENEOS Corporation (Tokyo)
Project description
Synthetic fuels which are attracting attention as next-generation fuels for the realisation of a decarbonised society, will be used for driving demonstrations of large vehicles, etc.
Synthetic fuels are carbon neutral fuels that can reduce CO2 emissions throughout the product life cycle from raw material production to product use.
Synthetic fuels will be produced at the demonstration plant. This demonstration plant is constructed with support from the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).The synthetic fuel produced at the demonstration plant will be used to contribute to the carbon neutrality of the Expo and help realise the “EXPO 2025 Green Vision”.

▽ About the Future Society Showcase Project
The Future Society Showcase Project is a general term referring to a group of projects that provide experiences to a wide range of participants and visitors from Japan and abroad by utilising technologies and services that support the theme of the Expo, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” for the development, operation, exhibition, and events of the Expo site, in the form of “demonstrations” that give a sense of the future beyond 2025, and “implementation” that is suitable for the Expo.
▽ About the synthetic fuels
Synthetic fuels are produced by synthesising hydrogen and CO2. Synthetic fuels are classified into liquid synthetic fuels and gaseous synthetic fuels. Liquid synthetic fuels are produced through FT synthesis reactions. The produced liquid synthetic fuel is a mixture of gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, etc. therefore, they are called artificial crude oil.
By using hydrogen produced by splitting water using electricity derived from renewable energy sources, and CO2 captured from exhaust gases from power plants and factories as raw materials, it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions throughout the entire product lifecycle. In addition, because they are liquid, synthetic fuels can utilise existing infrastructure, making them capable of contributing to carbon neutrality in a wide range of areas and industries.
