Ending Food Waste

by Alecsander Bucklin

Around the world, particularly in developed countries, there is a staggering amount of food wasted on a daily basis. As much as 60% of food produced is thrown away due to spoilage or unrealistic sell-by dates. While a large portion of food in supermarkets is thrown away every day, many stores even have restrictions on this food not being thrown away. Much of food waste also occurs at home, with many families and individuals irresponsibly handling food or buying too much. There must be greater education on the importance or efficiency with food use, in regard to both selling and consumption of food resources. This education should also be emphasized in developing countries as food becomes more easily accessible to regions where it previously was not. Additionally, laws should be passed to require supermarkets to donate food that would otherwise be thrown away, as has been recently been done in France.
