The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has launched an educational program in October 2020 at elementary and junior high schools in Osaka Prefecture.
This program is designed to encourage children, who will forge the future of our society, to participate in initiatives leading up to EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai at this stage, five years prior to its opening. It also focuses on them learning about the SDGs, discovering challenges facing the community or society on their own initiative, pondering how to solve these challenges in order to create an ideal future, and bringing forward ideas for “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, the theme of the Expo. The program also aims to promote greater interest among children in the Expo through such experience so as to motivate them to visit the Expo venue in 2025.
Under this program, teachers at the participating elementary and junior high schools in Osaka Prefecture will give classes featuring the Expo and SDGs based on dedicated teaching materials, edited by the Association. Spending about ten hours out of the periods for comprehensive learning, the classes aim to deepen children’s understanding about these subjects.
In addition, Ideas Meetings are scheduled for November-December this year, when companies working on the SDGs will be invited to make a presentation on their activities and interact with students, such as exchanging views about ideas proposed by the students. From February-March 2021, students will present the results of their learning gained through the classes or other sources at “Junior EXPO”.
