2024.05.27 Expo 2025 Volunteer Programmes Attracts Strong Interest

With less than one year to go until Osaka welcomes the world to Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai Japan on 13 April 2025, the results of the Expo 2025 Volunteer Programme recruitment have been announced.

The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition in conjunction with the Osaka Prefectural Government and Osaka City opened volunteer applications for a period of 96 days, from January 26 until April 30, 2024. During this time 55,634 applications were received against an initial target of 20,000 positions for both the Expo 2025 site and Osaka City volunteer programmes. Of this number, 20,204 applicants applied to both programmes.

Following the overwhelming response, the Expo 2025 Association has decided to increase the total number of volunteer positions to 30,000. Of this figure, 14,000 will be assigned roles at the Expo 2025 site on Yumeshima Island, while the remaining 16,000 will be stationed throughout Osaka City to assist visitors coming to Osaka for Expo.

Volunteer applications have come from a broad section of the community, with 40% of applications from people aged under the age of 30, while women make up more than 68% of applicants. While 66% come from within Osaka, volunteer applications from surrounding areas of Kansai are also represented, with 15% coming from nearby Hyogo Prefecture which includes the large port city of Kobe. A lottery will be held to select the 30,000 volunteer participants who will called for interviews starting from mid-June 2024. All applicants to be notified of the lottery results in early June 2024.

From April 13 to October 13, 2025, millions of visitors from around the world will join 161 participating countries, regions, and 9 international organisations, along with leading Japanese private sector firms and governmental participants to experience Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan under the theme of Designing Future Society for Our Lives.

In addition to international and domestic pavilions, visitors can experience Expo 2025’s Future Society Showcase Projects that will introduce next-generation technologies and social systems to provide a glimpse of future life and society beyond 2025. An array of Expo Events and Theme Weeks will run throughout the six months of Expo.
