The Land of Glaciers: Central Asia’s Water Tower

Located in the northeastern part of Central Asia, roughly 93% of Tajikistan is covered in mountains, and
the eastern portion includes the Pamir Mountains, which range from 6,000 to over 7,000 metres in
elevation.
The glaciers in those mountains are an essential source of fresh water for agriculture and daily life below.
The Amu Darya River in the south is the site of the highest-elevation dam in the world and produces the
most hydroelectric power in all of Central Asia.
With its glaciers and rich water resources, Tajikistan offers solutions to preserving a sustainable future.
