The World Student Discussions is an international exchange
program that has been ongoing since 1998, in which
universities and high schools in Japan and overseas
universities and high schools are paired up to create and
present presentations in collaboration according to the theme
of the conference. At the Expo site, several teams of
university and high school students from diverse backgrounds
who participated in the World Youth Meeting and gave
presentations on peace and human rights will consider the
meaning of the theme in more depth through discussions with
the participants of the Expo from the perspective of the
Expo's theme project of "Invigorating Lives."
Thematic Project Producers, Sachiko Nakajima, Hiroaki Miyata
as well as Professor Kan Suzuki would also join this
discussion.

【Reflection】
On Thursday, August 7, the “World Student Discussions” was
held at the Theme Week Studio of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. This
event was organized as part of the “World Youth Meeting,” an
international English speech contest hosted annually by
Ritsumeikan University and Nihon Fukushi University. Marking
its 25th anniversary this year, the program was presented as a
special Expo 2025 edition: the EXPO 2025 Special “World
Student Discussions.”
The event opened with a greeting from Mr. Manabu Tamura
(Senior Inspector, Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau,
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology). Discussions were joined by three commentators:
Ms. Sachiko Nakajima (CEO of steAm, Thematic Project Producer
for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai), Professor Kan Suzuki (Graduate
School of Public Policy, The University of Tokyo), and
Professor Yuuo Nakato (Vice President and Director of
International Affairs, Ritsumeikan University).
A total of 65 students participated, including high school
students from seven schools such as Ritsumeikan High School
and Ritsumeikan Moriyama High School, as well as university
and graduate students from 13 institutions including
Ritsumeikan University and Nihon Fukushi University. Divided
into four internationally diverse teams, the participants
represented 33 countries and regions across Asia, North
America, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East,
and Africa.
The discussion theme was “Peace and Human Rights.” Each team
addressed one of four topics—“Prejudice and Positive Bias,”
“Inclusive and Equitable Education,” “Linguistic
Discrimination,” and “Peace and Conflict.” Over the course of
five months, the students engaged in prior research and
analysis, preparing for their final presentations at the Expo
venue.
On the day of the event, participants delivered passionate
presentations, using gestures and expressions to propose
concrete action plans for the future. The Q&A sessions
following each speech saw numerous questions from the
audience, sparking lively exchanges of ideas. In addition, the
three commentators offered expert perspectives and
constructive advice, giving students the opportunity to deepen
their own thinking and broaden their viewpoints.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
The dialogues and networks built through this year’s “World
Student Discussions” are not intended to conclude at the Expo,
but rather serve as a starting point for continued and
evolving development. Building on the 25-year history of the
“World Youth Meeting,” the WSDs held on the Expo stage
provided a significant opportunity to share discussions on
peace and human rights among students from more diverse
countries and regions, and to consider future actions
together.
As a post-event initiative, we will first continue exchanges
among the students who participated in this year’s WSDs and
work together to explore how the concrete action plans
proposed during the discussions can be put into practice.
Through online exchanges and small-scale study sessions, we
will support students in learning from one another proactively
and in turning their ideas into action.
In addition, on the operational side, we will examine how to
provide such opportunities for internationally minded
discussions in a more stable and sustainable manner. Thematic
Project Producer for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Ms. Sachiko
Nakajima, and Professor Kan Suzuki will continue to be
involved in some capacity, serving as bridges between
educational settings and society. Furthermore, we will
collaborate with the “School of the Earth’s Future,” a network
that has been developed under the Jellyfish Project to connect
people interested in education both in Japan and abroad.
Through this collaboration, we aim to ensure that the
discussions and outcomes are utilized in exploratory learning
and international issue studies in high schools and
universities worldwide. We also hope to expand frameworks that
empower students themselves to transcend the boundaries of
nation and school, and to speak out to the world in their own
voices.
Moreover, we plan to encourage broader participation, not only
from Asia, North America, and Europe, but also from regions
across the Global South, thereby expanding the foundation for
dialogue among young people from truly diverse backgrounds. We
are also considering the archiving of presentation materials
and videos, and the development of a platform that can be
utilized by schools around the world.
“World Student Discussions” will update the 25-year tradition
of international exchange and, looking ahead to the next
decade, will evolve into a permanent international dialogue
platform where young people worldwide can think and act
together. We are committed to carrying forward the momentum
born at the Expo, and to fostering a mechanism in which the
voices of young people can shape society, in collaboration
with the School of the Earth’s Future and other diverse
networks.
