Reports
【Reflection】
Coinciding with the Expo’s Peace and Human Rights Week, the
Nordic Pavilion hosted the inaugural joint conference “NATO
Day”. The event brought together representatives from the five
Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and
Sweden), NATO Headquarters, Japan, and other international
partners to discuss the future of peace and security. It
gained particular attention as the first co-hosted conference
since Sweden and Finland joined NATO.
The opening day reflected on NATO’s role and history, while
also introducing its cooperation with Japan. A session on
Women, Peace and Security (WPS) highlighted the importance of
gender inclusion in peacebuilding. Discussions on emerging
threats such as artificial intelligence and cyberattacks saw
exchanges among government officials, business leaders and
research institutions, reaffirming the need for international
cooperation.
On the second day, dialogues with partners from the
Indo-Pacific region and debates on support for Ukraine
underlined the significance of solidarity in global security.
The inclusion of a youth panel and policy simulation provided
young participants with a unique opportunity to engage
directly with security challenges. Feedback from attendees
noted that the event encouraged them to view security as a
personal concern, reinforcing its role as a platform for
diverse perspectives.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
NATO Day highlighted the necessity for the international
community to work together in addressing the multifaceted
challenges of peace and security. It was particularly
recognised that gender inclusion, youth participation, and
cooperation on new domains such as AI and cyber security will
grow ever more vital.
The Nordic Pavilion will build upon the knowledge and
discussions generated at this event. Under the theme “Nordic
Circle – Towards a Better Tomorrow Together”, it will continue
to host events on peace, human rights and sustainability,
further deepening these dialogues. Building on this
conference, exchanges between NATO, Japan and Indo-Pacific
partners will also be strengthened, contributing to the
development of a broader global security network.
In addition, drawing on the insights from the youth panel and
policy simulation, the Pavilion will actively support the
engagement of the next generation. This will help nurture an
understanding of security not as a distant issue, but as a
matter relevant to everyday life, thereby fostering a
collective determination to build a peaceful future.
