Reports
【Reflection】
The programme “AIKA: Interactive AI for Learning and Playing”,
presented by the Republic of Kazakhstan at Expo 2025,
introduced a compelling and forward-looking vision that
bridges education and entertainment through artificial
intelligence. Hosted by a dynamic team of innovators and
professionals, the session positioned Kazakhstan as an
emerging thought leader in the field of AI-powered educational
ecosystems.
The session began with an overview of the AIKA project, a
platform that merges interactive learning modules and gamified
experiences using AI technologies. The concept focuses on
developing core 21st-century skills—creative thinking,
problem-solving, collaboration, and digital literacy—through
personalised and playful engagement. It was made clear that
AIKA is more than an application; it is an adaptive learning
environment capable of catering to different cognitive styles
and learning speeds.
Sultan Ilyassov, Founder of Umay Labs and a Forbes 30 Under 30
laureate, outlined how the AIKA platform leverages natural
language processing and behavioural modelling to personalise
educational content in real time. He stressed the importance
of designing systems that are culturally aware, accessible,
and engaging to youth across diverse contexts.
Co-founder of Nearby, Aigerim Berekesheva, brought an
international legal perspective, addressing the importance of
digital rights, ethical data usage, and cross-border
partnerships in AI learning platforms. Her intervention
highlighted the growing need for regulatory alignment in
AI-driven educational tools, especially in regions with
differing privacy norms.
Public health expert Rauza Dosjan drew attention to the mental
wellbeing implications of AI usage in childhood development,
calling for a balanced approach that supports healthy screen
habits and inclusive digital design.
Dinmukhamed Assylbekov, Head of AI at Umay Labs, introduced
the backend framework of the AIKA platform, showcasing its
machine learning adaptability and interactive agent design. He
demonstrated how feedback loops and emotional recognition
modules are used not only to increase learning outcomes but
also to build emotional resilience and empathy in young users.
Together, the speakers framed AIKA as a promising case study
for integrating AI into educational systems in a way that is
meaningful, ethical, and forward-thinking. The audience was
left with a clear understanding of how emerging technologies
can promote not only knowledge acquisition but also
social-emotional learning and cognitive development.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following its presentation at Expo 2025, the AIKA project
team—led by Umay Labs with support from national institutions
in Kazakhstan—is pursuing a series of strategic initiatives to
bring the platform into broader educational and international
contexts.
First, a pilot programme is being rolled out in select
Kazakhstani schools to test the platform’s effectiveness in
real-time classroom settings. The results will help fine-tune
adaptive learning algorithms and provide localised content
that aligns with national education standards.
Second, the team is in the early stages of developing a
regional consortium with neighbouring Central Asian countries
to expand the use of AIKA across linguistically and culturally
similar communities. This partnership would focus on
multilingual AI agents, collaborative content co-creation, and
data-sharing protocols respecting regional legal frameworks.
In addition, Umay Labs is exploring partnerships with edtech
firms in Europe and Southeast Asia to deploy AIKA in
non-formal learning environments, including museums, science
centres, and after-school clubs. The aim is to build
AI-enabled play-based learning spaces that can operate both
online and offline, enhancing accessibility in underserved
areas.
The team also plans to launch a fellowship programme for young
AI developers and educators, fostering interdisciplinary
collaboration and ethical AI development. This initiative is
expected to position Kazakhstan as a regional innovation hub
for human-centred AI in education.
Through these initiatives, AIKA is not just being scaled—it is
evolving as a modular and participatory platform that bridges
innovation, cultural relevance, and inclusive learning. The
post-Expo roadmap makes it clear that Kazakhstan envisions
AIKA not as a static tool, but as a growing ecosystem with
global potential.
