【Reflection】
The programme “From Talent to Triumph: Shaping Indonesia’s
Future through Workforce Expansion” was held at the Indonesia
Pavilion during Expo 2025 in Osaka and served as a
multifaceted platform for dialogue on workforce development
between Indonesia and Japan. Currently, around 200,000
Indonesians reside in Japan, and foreign workers are
increasingly welcomed across a wide range of sectors,
including railways, logistics, and skilled labour.
The session highlighted initiatives such as the Jakarta MRT
Academy and company-led training programmes, which prepare
participants to become immediately effective in their roles,
with achievements and challenges openly shared among
attendees. Furthermore, internships for Indonesian university
students offered not only practical experience but also
opportunities to deepen cultural understanding and teamwork,
facilitating engagement across language and cultural
differences. Additionally, SBI Remit’s low-cost, multilingual
remittance services were presented as a practical measure to
support workers’ livelihoods and assist their families.
Overall, the session underscored the importance of
collaboration among governments, companies, and educational
institutions, demonstrating that such coordinated efforts not
only address workforce shortages but also promote long-term
career development and post-return contributions to industry.
Participants shared a common understanding that combining
innovative training with cultural awareness is key to
sustainable workforce development.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the session, both Japan and Indonesia have been
advancing concrete measures to strengthen workforce
development and collaborative frameworks. In the railway
sector, initiatives include the utilisation of specified
skilled visas and enhanced training to prepare candidates for
domestic qualification examinations. In addition, internships
and skills training are being considered for logistics and
manufacturing sectors. Educational institutions and companies
are working to improve “Japanese plus alpha” skills and
support career development, fostering personnel who can
contribute immediately in their roles. Furthermore, the
expansion of SBI Remit’s remittance and banking services
continues to play a key role in supporting workers’
livelihoods and promoting financial inclusion. Cultural and
labour ethics education is also helping to facilitate social
integration for Indonesian workers in Japan, establishing a
foundation for long-term collaboration. These efforts extend
beyond merely supplying labour; they represent a sustainable
model aimed at fostering industry development and contributing
to local communities upon workers’ return.
Moving forward, through continued public-private collaboration
between Japan and Indonesia, it is expected that the quality
of workforce development will improve and mutually beneficial
employment opportunities will be created.
