2024.03.29 Expo 2025 Green Vision (2024 Edition) Announced

The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has published the Expo 2025 Green Vision (2024 Edition) regarding the directions and core measures to be taken by Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “the Expo”) with respect to decarbonisation and resource recycling in order to achieve sustainability through the preparation and operation of the Expo. The EXPO 2025 Green Vision (2024 Edition) consists of four sections: Decarbonisation, Resource Circulation and Circular Economy, Natural Environment, and Cross-cutting issues.
In the decarbonisation section, the BAU*1 of CHG*2 emissions at the Expo was revised to reflect the actual results of 2023 and the newly revealed facilities as the plan progresses. In addition, the implementation status of each specific decarbonisation technology and initiative has been updated.
In the section on resource recycling and circular economy, the volume of waste emissions related to venue operations has been organised according to waste sorting categories, and reduction targets have been set. Concerning venue management, the Association reviewed waste reduction and recycling initiatives and reflected the measures in the guidelines. This includes the establishment of an operation plan for reusable tableware, the recommendation to bring your own bottle, a ban on the distribution of plastic shopping bags, food loss prevention measures, and the recycling of food waste. In addition, the Association set initiatives and targets for the reuse of waste from facility equipment.

In the Natural Environment section, the Association added a joint study with NGOs centred on the theme of conservation and considerations related to the habitat environment of birds, as well as information on biodiversity conservation in cooperation with projects promoted by Osaka and Hyogo prefectures.

*1 GHG (Greenhouse Gas): Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane
*2 BAU (Business-as-Usual): The amount of greenhouse gas emissions when not executing additional measures.
