The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition (hereinafter referred to as “the Association”) is pleased to announce that “The Expo Grand Sumo Tournament” will be held on 3 August and “Sumo to bring the World together! Sumo Expo 2025” will be held on 4 August.
These events will require advance booking.

“The Expo Grand Sumo Tournament”
Time and date: 9:00, Sunday, 3 August 2025 (planned)
Venue: EXPO Exhibition Centre “WASSE”
Performers: 200 sumo wrestlers from the Japan Sumo Association, including Yokozuna (grand champion).
Description: The ‘Grand Sumo Tournament’ tour of Japan’s national sport will be making a stop at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Japan’s national sport ‘Grand Sumo’, the best entertainment in Japan, will offer surprises and excitement to fans at home and abroad.
Reservations: This event will require advance booking (dates of the booking period will be announced from winter 2024).

“Sumo to bring the World together! Sumo Expo 2025”
Date: Monday, 4 August, 2025
Venue: EXPO Exhibition Centre “WASSE”
Performers: Officials from municipalities connected to sumo across Japan, as well as Sumo Expo 2025-related individuals from both Japan and abroad.
Description: Sumo, Japan’s national sport, is a competition of mind, technique, and physical strength, where wrestlers clash using only their bodies. With a history so long that it appears in ancient texts like the “Kojiki” and “Nihon Shoki,” sumo has evolved into a solemn ritual offering to the gods, as well as a sport that hones both mind and body. It has become a deeply rooted traditional culture across Japan, with each region adding its own unique characteristics. Globally, similar sports have been practiced in various countries since ancient times. This is why we now want to unite the world through the shared passion for sumo. Driven by this wish, municipalities connected to sumo across Japan have come together to launch a special event at the 2025 World Expo, where visitors can learn about and experience sumo culture from Japan and around the world. This is Sumo Expo 2025.

▽ Grand Sumo Suita Expo Tournament in Suita, December 2024
As a handover between the Japan World Exposition Osaka 1970 and the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, a Grand Tournament will be held in Suita December 2024, just before the opening of the Expo.
This is the start of a project to showcase the appeal of sumo to the world, using Suita, the site of the Japan World Exposition Osaka 1970, and Yumeshima Island, the site of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, as the stage for these two historic events.
The “Grand Sumo Suita Expo Tournament” in Suita City will be held for the first time in almost 50 years, coincidentally at the same time as the previous Expo 1970.
Local university students will be promoting this memorable Grand Sumo Tournament with their young power, volunteering and producing related events.
The Grand Sumo Tournament in Suita City is a cultural heritage project for the next generation, created by the young generation, mainly university students, with the involvement of the surrounding community.
