The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition (hereinafter referred to as “the Association”) is pleased to announce the sponsor for the “Recycling of Hard-to-Recycle Paper” Project, part of the Future Society Showcase Project “Green Expo” at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “the Expo”).
▽ Project Overview
The project provides a series of systems to collect paper that is not suitable for recycling (difficult-to-recycle wastepaper: paper cups and plates, drinks cartons with plastic caps, receipts, ice-cream cups, etc.) generated at the Expo site, recycle them into toilet paper and deliver them to the Future Life Zone in the venue.

Corelex Shin-Ei Co., Ltd. (Shizuoka)
▽ Project Details
The Expo site is promoting a policy of plastic avoidance and reduction. It is expected that the use of paper as an alternative material to plastics will increase. For example, disposable tableware (paper cups and paper containers) used for eating and drinking are a prime example, as they are covered with food and drink and have a thin plastic film attached to the paper, which means they cannot be recycled as paper so are usually burnt as difficult-to-recycle wastepaper.
In this project, the recycled processing technology of Corelex Shin-Ei Co., Ltd. is used to extract paper resources from hard-to-recycle paper and recycle it into toilet paper, thereby contributing to resource recycling. By making effective use of resources, the use of virgin pulp can be reduced. The collected hard-to-recycle paper is transformed into toilet paper within three days of arrival at the mill and is then used in the toilets in the Future Life Zone.
There is concern that the amount of hard-to-recycle paper will increase in the future as more highly functional paper replaces plastic. Through the recycling of hard-to-recycle paper in this project, decarbonisation and resource recycling will be promoted by reducing the amount of waste incinerated.
