On December 11, 2023, the Sumitomo EXPO 2025 Promotion Committee held a groundbreaking ceremony at the planned construction site in Yumeshima where the Pavilion for Private Sectors, “Sumitomo Pavilion”, is scheduled to be built for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
Representatives of the Sumitomo EXPO 2025 Promotion Committee, construction and management representatives, and other related parties attended the ceremony.
The construction of the pavilion is scheduled to begin on December 15, 2023. The construction of the “Sumitomo Pavilion” will begin with the warmth and comfort of wood while realizing the effective use and recycling of wood resources in a way that is both ecological and economical.

The design of the Sumitomo Pavilion is inspired by the “peaks of the Besshi Mountains” in Shikoku, Japan where the foundation of Sumitomo’s growth was established; and features a silhouette of its mountain ranges. The Pavilion is built with the trees of the “Sumitomo Forest”, which has lived through more than 400 years of Sumitomo history. The lumber is processed into “plywood” based on the concept of “valuing each life, one tree at a time” and ensuring that the tree is used in its entirety. Furthermore, the leftover “peeling core” from peeling the logs will be turned into benches to be set up throughout the space.
