On Thursday, 26 March, “EXPO 2025 VIRTUAL EXPO~YUMESHIMA ISLANDS IN THE SKY~”, the virtual site of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, has been certified as the world’s “largest virtual reality Expo” of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ .

Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan operated the virtual Expo as an “inclusive Expo” available between Thursday, 3 April and Monday, 13 October 2025. Visitors could experience virtual exhibits and events for free as an avatar via their smartphone, VR goggles, or computer.

The unprecedented format of the virtual Expo, which enabled visitors to participate in, and experience exhibits and events through avatars, proved to be very popular. The fact that it had the largest number of exhibits by countries and regions in the world led to this GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ certification.

The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition (hereinafter referred to as the “Association”) will hold a series of events, titled “Expo 2025 Futures”, to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “the Expo”) from April 2026. “Expo 2025 Futures” is a series of events held over six months with the goal of bringing together the diverse possibilities for the future that were born at the Expo, develop them and pass them on to the next generation. Through these events we will look back on the Expo and connect its legacy to the future together with participants.

The first event, Opening One-Year Anniversary Event “Expo 2025 Futures Festival”, will be held on Sunday, 12 April 2026 at the Maple River Grassy Area at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park (Suita City). In addition, Opening One-Year Anniversary Event “Expo 2025 Futures Station” will be held for seven days between Wednesday, 8 April and Tuesday, 14 April 2026 at above ground Osaka Metro Chuo Line Yumeshima Station.

The second event, Nationwide Caravan Event “EXPO2025 Futures Tour,” is scheduled to visit six cities across Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Niigata, Kanazawa, and Takamatsu) from July to October 2026. Following this, in October 2026, one year after the closing of the Expo, the third event, “EXPO2025 Futures Summit,” will be held. This one-year anniversary event will connect the achievements of the Expo to future society.

This special event will look back on Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan and contemplate its legacy. Relive the Expo with stage performances, VR footage, and pavilion exhibits. In addition, the widely popular “One World, One Planet.” drone show will be revived and light up the Osaka night sky for one night only! The creative team from the Expo has reunited to create the drone show programme.

Alongside this event, a satellite venue above ground at Osaka Metro Chuo Line Yumeshima Station, will become a station to the future where a programme themed around the journey to the future will be held.

The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition has collaborated with the Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027, Yokohama to transplant six trees from the site of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “Expo 2025”) to the site of Expo 2027 Yokohama, Japan (hereinafter referred to as “GREEN x EXPO 2027”) as part of its legacy.

The trees were loaded into transport at the Expo 2025 site on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, and were unloaded at the GREEN x EXPO 2027 site on Friday, 6 March 2026. In line with GREEN x EXPO 2027’s principle of promoting a sustainable society that coexists with the environment, modal shift was implemented from trucks to rail to reduce the carbon emissions of the transport.

This initiative symbolically connects the philosophies of both Expos, and the transported trees were planted at the GREEN x EXPO 2027 venue. The loading and unloading of the trees, as well as planting at the GREEN×EXPO 2027 venue, is being carried out with the support of DAIRINKAI, established for the International Garden and Greenery Exposition (held in 1990).

DAIRINKAI was founded in 1990 by a group of local Kansai businesses that were major clients of the former Daiwa Bank, the predecessor of Resona Bank, to jointly exhibit at the International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in Osaka. The organisation has continued its activities ever since and currently consists of 51 companies. With the goal of revitalising Osaka through flowers and greenery, they engage in a variety of support and community activities across the region.
