The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition (hereinafter referred to as “the Association”) previously announced that Legionella bacteria above the standard values set out in the “Guidelines for the Prevention of Legionnaires Disease” issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare had been detected in seawater at the Water Plaza on 4 June.
Those results were obtained via the viable bacteria PCR method of testing, which provides rapid results. Culture testing was also simultaneously conducted on the samples of seawater collected on 30 May, 3 June, and 7 June.
The results of the culture tests were below the detection limit in all cases. Therefore, it was confirmed that Legionella bacteria were not present in the seawater at the Water Plaza above the standard values set by the “Guidelines for the Prevention of Legionnaires Disease” on 30 May, 3 June, and 7 June. These results have been shared with the Osaka City Public Health Centre.
Based on the results, the Association and the sponsors will make the decision to reopen the water show in cooperation with the Osaka City Public Health Centre and experts, while making technical adjustments to the equipment, etc. The date of the reopening will be announced at a later date.
