In contrast to the Japanese summer heat, the jagged shapes of the Canada Pavilion rise from the blue and white ground resembling an ice jam – ice formations that occur when rivers begin to thaw in spring. Stepping inside, you find yourself submerged in the Saint Lawrence River, one of Canada’s great northern rivers. Using augmented reality (AR) tablets, visitors are encouraged to look for salmon swimming above their heads.
But this is only the tip of the AR iceberg, or glacier as it turns out! Past the salmon lies a spacious room with nine glaciers of different shapes and sizes. Each one is an exciting treasure hunt, as you move your tablet into just the right spot to make the initially barren looking glaciers suddenly spring to life through the power of AR. A variety of images, both life size and miniature, show Canada’s natural beauty, its people, and the activities that connect the two, from traditional indigenous crafts to modern wind farms. One glacier is revealed to be a map of Canada. Another has adorable sled-dogs, complete with barking sound effects. There are even four hidden animals to find! Friendly staff are happy to help as well as answer any questions you may have about the displays.
After your AR scavenger hunt, be sure to stop by the restaurant and try one of several flavours of poutine or some maple soft serve ice cream! The Canada Pavilion’s architecture may be inspired by ice but what really shines through is the warmth of the country’s hospitality.
