Co-creating Cultures for the Future Week
Selecting Italy
Italian Republic
Selecting Italy has been, since 2022, a platform for an
annual comparison between institutions, businesses and
stakeholders aimed at the elaboration of concrete proposals
to enhance the attractiveness of the country system on
foreign markets.
Enhancing Selecting Italy in the context of Expo Osaka 2025
means actively working to consolidate relations between the
two countries and between their reciprocal levels of
government in terms of economic, industrial and
technological cooperation.
Selecting Italy reaffirms the central role of the
territories in the process of defining cooperation,
innovation and sustainability strategies and strongly
emphasises the value of people and communities as the
primary vectors of economic development.
The goal of the Japanese edition of Selecting Italy is to
continue enhancing relationships for the development of
investments between Italy and Japan, promoting partnerships
between regions with aligned specialties.

【Reflection】
"Selecting Italy" aimed at presenting Italian
culture and technology as a means of promoting economic
exchange between Italy and Japan. It provided a timely and
forward-looking platform for deepening Japan–Italy relations,
while also generating insights relevant to other countries and
regions facing similar social and economic transitions.
In fact, the two countries share many similarities. Firstly,
they both have a rich cultural landscape, which is deeply
rooted in their social fabric and yet varies drastically from
region to region. Furthermore, they also share a long history
and passion for craftsmanship, innovation, and the pursuit of
quality. As such, Italy looks to deepen its ties with Japan,
attracting international investments and adding to the 630
Japanese firms already operating on Italian soil.
Some prominent examples of such firms are Shionogi, Freund
Corporation, and NIDEC Corporation. Shionogi is one of the few
firms in the world to specialize in infectious diseases, and
it cooperated in the R&D process of handling the COVID-19
crisis. Freund Corporation is a manufacturer of pharmaceutical
plants, which supplies clients all around the globe. NIDEC
Corporation is a world leader in the automotive sector, with a
focus on the production of electric motors. Currently, it
employs over 2,000 workers in Italy across 15 manufacturing
plants.
The regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Calabria appear to be
particularly well suited for Japanese investments, as they
both offer technical advantages with their prominent and
strategically located ports (Trieste and Gioia Tauro
respectively), and the fiscal incentives they offer, and the
rich ecosystem of research and innovation fostered by their
universities (Università della Calabria).
Cultural and industrial affinities between Japan and
Italy—such as the shared emphasis on craftsmanship, design,
and technological refinement—offered an inspiring reference
point for other nations exploring how to balance tradition and
innovation. The discussions promoted a human-centred,
value-driven approach to international collaboration,
potentially contributing to the shaping of more inclusive and
culturally sensitive global partnerships.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
The programme’s focus on inclusive innovation rooted in
regional diversity, and its cross-cutting approach to
governance and culture, has continued to resonate beyond the
Expo. In particular, new exchanges are beginning to take shape
between local governments, universities, and civil society
organisations in Japan and Italy, especially in the areas of
policymaking and human resource development.
On the Italian side, drawing inspiration from Japan’s
experience with community-based initiatives and public-private
collaboration, several new regional revitalisation proposals
are being developed. These focus on the empowerment of young
people and women, as well as the creative use of cultural
heritage. Meanwhile, growing interest in Italy’s
cross-sectoral policy initiatives—such as the National
Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)—has led to the planning of
dialogue-based seminars in Japan for local policymakers and
researchers alike.
Looking ahead, there are plans to organise joint study visits
and online forums between practitioners in both countries.
These will address common challenges such as rural
revitalisation, support for cultural industries, and
entrepreneurship. Such exchanges have the potential to evolve
into broader, multilateral collaborations involving other
regions and countries.
“Selecting Italy” is thus serving as a springboard for
international partnerships rooted in local contexts. By
fostering dialogue across systems, cultures, and sectors, the
programme continues to contribute to the Expo’s vision of
co-creation and international understanding.

Massimiliano Fedriga
President of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces of Italy, President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region
Born in Verona, I grew up in Trieste, where I studied
at the Galilei scientific high school and at the
Faculty of Communication Sciences. After graduating, I
obtained a Master's degree in Communication
Analysis and Management and worked as a marketing
manager for several companies in the Northeast.
In addition to my wife Elena, whom I married in 2013
and who gave me two wonderful children, my great love
has always been politics. A passion that I began to
cultivate when I was just 15 years old and that, in
2003, led me to hold the position of provincial
secretary of the League.
In 2008 I was elected for the first time to the
Chamber of Deputies, a seat confirmed in both 2013 and
2018: ten intense years, which left me with the skills
resulting from years of battles in the Labour
Commission and a wonderful period of almost four years
as President of the Lega and Autonomies parliamentary
group.
On 29 April 2018, the citizens of Friuli Venezia
Giulia called me home, entrusting me with the
leadership of the Region for the first time and
subsequently renewing their trust in me in the session
of 2 and 3 April 2023: a mandate to which was added -
starting from 9 April 2021 - that of president of the
Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces.
