【Reflection】
At Expo 2025, the presentations held at the Bulgaria
Pavilion—“Plant Breeding and Innovation” and “Bioeconomy:
Foods and Products with Higher Added Value”—offered a
compelling showcase of Bulgaria’s advanced research and
industrial capabilities in agriculture, food, and bioeconomy.
These presentations left a strong impression on attendees from
various sectors.
In the field of plant breeding, Bulgaria highlighted its
140-year legacy of agricultural research and development. The
presentation introduced innovative vegetable varieties that
successfully balance “traditional taste” with modern needs
such as high yield and disease resistance. Among them, tomato
varieties such as Pink Heart and Scarlet Heart stood out as
emblematic examples, highly praised for their flavor and
consumer appeal.
Additionally, the integration of phenomics—cutting-edge
technology that combines drone, satellite imagery, and AI for
efficient trait analysis—with genomics-based breeding was
showcased. These examples drew attention as forward-looking
solutions for sustainable agriculture and climate
resilience.
In the area of bioeconomy, Bulgaria presented technologies
rooted in its legacy of space food development, along with
pioneering approaches such as the extraction of bioactive
compounds from rose oil distillation by-products. These
technologies demonstrated how agricultural waste can be
transformed into functional, value-added products.
Altogether, these initiatives extended beyond mere
agricultural or food topics. They embodied Bulgaria’s unique
value proposition—connecting food and health, environment and
economy, and tradition with innovation—and resonated with the
broader goals of Expo 2025.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Through these presentations, Bulgaria’s deep expertise in
plant breeding and food science—as well as its commitment to
next-generation innovation—became abundantly clear. Moving
forward, Bulgaria intends to build on these strengths and
strengthen collaboration with Japan and the wider Asian
market.
In plant breeding, newly developed varieties that combine
excellent taste, quality, and disease resistance have garnered
strong interest. These cultivars not only adapt well to
regional climates and agricultural conditions but also respond
to consumer demands for safety and familiarity. As such,
strategic cooperation involving joint field trials,
promotional activities, and market entry initiatives is
anticipated in Japan.
Bulgaria’s bioeconomy technologies, exemplified by space
nutrition and valorization of rose oil by-products, offer
promising models for circular value creation. These
technologies contribute to reducing food loss and
environmental impact while generating new business
opportunities. Collaboration with Japanese companies and
research institutions in areas such as extract technology
transfer, cosmetics, and health foods is expected to progress
in the near future.
Furthermore, “smart breeding” technologies utilizing drones,
satellite data, and AI offer meaningful solutions to
challenges faced by Japanese agriculture, such as labor
shortages and climate adaptation. Joint demonstration
projects, technical exchange, and academic partnerships will
be essential in fostering sustainable agricultural practices
in both countries.
Equally important is the storytelling behind Bulgaria’s
agricultural products—the culture, history, and authenticity
embedded in its traditional crops and local foods. These are
not just commodities, but valuable brand assets. By aligning
with Japanese consumers’ appreciation for food culture and
local identity, Bulgaria can build lasting recognition and
trust in the market.
In sum, the fusion of science, technology, and cultural
heritage paves the way for a new phase of value co-creation
between Bulgaria and Japan. The Expo 2025 platform has
undoubtedly laid the foundation for this journey.
