【Reflection】
This programme served as a valuable opportunity to showcase
the diversity of sustainable products and technologies
originating from Indonesia, and to widely communicate the
country’s efforts to achieve both environmental conservation
and economic development. Beginning with remarks from the Vice
Minister of Trade of Indonesia, companies from various
sectors—such as food, fashion, and building materials—took the
stage to share not only their products, but also the social
and environmental values embedded in their development.
Particular attention was drawn to initiatives that transform
agricultural by-products and plastic waste into valuable
resources. One example is “Plantout”, a building material made
from rice husks and recycled plastic, which received high
praise for combining durability with environmental
performance. Additionally, bio-based materials derived from
mushroom mycelium—using fermentation techniques originally
applied in tempeh production—were introduced as chemical-free,
mouldable materials with promising applications in furniture,
architecture, and fashion.
Moreover, the participating companies actively engaged in
business matching with Japanese firms and organisations,
exploring the potential for international collaboration
focused on sustainability. Their strong interest in entering
the Japanese market, along with their openness to mutual
cultural and technological understanding, left a positive
impression.
Through this programme, a new foundation for cooperation
between Indonesia and Japan was established. Expo 2025 Osaka,
Kansai served as a platform for taking a meaningful step
towards the co-creation of a more sustainable future society.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the programme, business discussions and information
exchanges between participating Indonesian companies and
Japanese firms have continued, with some cases already moving
towards concrete business development as a result of their
involvement in Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
In particular, building materials made from recycled
plastic—featured in the programme—are now actually being used
in the construction of the Indonesia Pavilion itself. The fact
that these materials have been adopted not just for exhibition
but in the actual structure of the pavilion has demonstrated
the reliability and practical applicability of the technology.
Their durability and design quality have been highly
evaluated.
Based on feedback from visitors and growing interest from the
Japanese market, participating companies are also refining
their products and pursuing localisation strategies. Marketing
efforts are being restructured with a focus on expanding
distribution channels, while attention is being paid to key
aspects such as environmental consciousness, integration with
local economies, and aesthetic value. Plans are underway to
strengthen messaging around the social value of these
products.
Furthermore, networks established through the Expo are being
leveraged as a foundation for future collaboration in research
and technology transfer. Possibilities for partnerships with
universities, research institutions, and start-ups in both
Indonesia and Japan are being explored. These international
collaborations are expected to contribute not only to the
advancement of sustainable development but also to
next-generation talent development and industrial
innovation.
Many of the companies involved in this programme plan to
participate again in the upcoming Trade Expo Indonesia,
scheduled for October 2025. The event is positioned as a
further opportunity to deepen connections with Japanese
businesses and institutions. This ongoing collaboration,
initiated at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, is emerging as a model
case of international partnership aimed at building a
sustainable society.
