May 31st is "World No Tobacco Day," established by
the World Health Organization (WHO). The Ministry of Health,
Labour and Welfare designates the week starting from World No
Tobacco Day as "No Smoking Week" to strengthen
public awareness of the health effects of smoking. Smoking is
a significant cause of various lifestyle-related diseases and
serious health problems, including lung cancer. Passive
smoking is also a concern, as it harms the health of
non-smokers.This week provides an opportunity for individuals
to recognize the dangers of smoking and the importance of
quitting as a personal issue, and to promote anti-smoking
measures continuously.
Reports
【Reflection】
Through this program, by learning about global smoking and
secondhand smoke prevention measures from international
students, we gained a clearer understanding of the social
backgrounds and cultural differences that influence such
policies, as well as Japan’s current situation and challenges.
With the addition of expert perspectives, it was reaffirmed
that in order to realize a society free from secondhand smoke,
it is essential for people from various positions to engage in
discussion, think together, and build mutual understanding.
The program received strong responses not only from studio
attendees but also from viewers of the live and archived
broadcasts, indicating a high level of public interest. We
will continue to promote initiatives aimed at achieving a
society free from secondhand smoke.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Through this program, the importance of engaging diverse
stakeholders from various backgrounds in dialogue and
fostering mutual understanding in promoting measures against
smoking and secondhand smoke was reaffirmed. Moving forward,
we will continue to implement related initiatives such as
World No Tobacco Day, No Smoking Week, and the Smart Life
Project, while also providing opportunities for awareness and
learning similar to this program. In addition, the Ministry of
Health, Labour and Welfare will continue to advance smoking
and secondhand smoke prevention measures in collaboration with
local governments and relevant organizations.
