SDGs+Beyond Future Society for Life Week
The 7th Nikkei Well-being Symposium
NIKKEI
"Well-being Initiative" is a corporate consortium committed to incorporating the concept of "well-being" and new indicators as social agendas for the upcoming era, aimed at designing a better society. Since its launch in March 2021, we have conducted numerous discussions and implemented specific practices to operationalize well-being in society. We will introduce our activities, and, inviting experts and corporate representatives from both domestically and overseas, we will share the latest trends in well-being that are intensifying with a view to the world after 2030.

Reports
【Reflection】
Discussions centered on the new international framework “SWGs
(Sustainable Wellbeing Goals),” succeeding the SDGs
(Sustainable Development Goals). With the 2030 SDG targets
approaching, the challenge was presented: how to measure and
improve not only material wealth but also the quality of
people's physical and mental health and happiness across
society.
Presentations from participating organizations, including
Sumitomo Life Insurance, MS&AD InterRisk Research
Institute, and the OECD, introduced concrete initiatives from
their respective perspectives. Sumitomo Life Insurance
presented its corporate stance under the banner “for Your
Wellbeing,” aiming to realize better lives through the
visualization of healthy life expectancy and well-being
levels. MS&AD contributes to the harmony between local
communities and the environment by promoting the visualization
of natural disaster risks and environmental conservation at
the watershed level. The OECD reported revisions to its
guidelines for scientifically measuring subjective well-being,
indicating progress in establishing a foundation for policy
development and international comparisons.
The symposium addressed the paradox in Japan of “healthy
longevity” coexisting with “declining well-being,”
highlighting the shared need for new societal goals
prioritizing mental health and increased life satisfaction.
Discussions unfolded from various angles, including corporate
talent development, enhancing the well-being of working
people, and fostering awareness among younger generations
through university collaborations.
Practical examples of enhancing well-being across society were
introduced. These included corporate initiatives reflecting
young people's voices in management through dialogue with
future generations (FR activities) and efforts like Persol and
Ajinomoto's promotion of “Well-being at Work.” Finally,
the “SWGs Declaration” was read aloud, expressing a commitment
to pursue a sustainable future through harmony among people,
society, and the planet. This symposium served as a valuable
opportunity to reaffirm the importance of social
transformation centered on well-being and to heighten
awareness for future new global goals.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Building on the insights shared at this symposium, we will now
work to widely disseminate the concept of “SWGs (Sustainable
Well-being Goals)” throughout society and promote their
implementation as new global goals beyond 2030. It is crucial
that businesses, governments, and research institutions
continue developing frameworks to measure and enhance
people's happiness and physical and mental health, each
from their respective perspectives.
In particular, the practical initiatives introduced at this
symposium—such as Sumitomo Life's visualization of
healthy life expectancy and development of a well-being app,
MS&AD's regional revitalization through watershed
conservation, and the OECD's development of international
measurement indicators—provide concrete guidelines for
enhancing societal well-being as a whole. We expect these case
studies to be shared and, through industry-academia-government
collaboration, to expand into more diverse fields.
Furthermore, corporate initiatives such as Future Generations
Relations (FR) activities and support for employee career
autonomy directly contribute to sustainable corporate
management and the creation of social value. By continuously
disseminating these practices even after the symposium, we
will contribute to building a society where the next
generation can live with pride.
Building upon the symposium's guiding principle of
“constructing a well-being society through harmony among
people, society, and the Earth,” diverse stakeholders will
continue collaborating to advance initiatives aiming for a
future that balances happiness and sustainability.
