【Reflection】
Observations
As part of the Theme Week “SDGs+Beyond: Designing Future
Society for Our Lives” at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, EY Japan
hosted a seminar titled “A Choice to Change the Future. What
We Can Do Now. — Creating a Sustainability Legacy Inspired by
the Osaka-Kansai Expo” on October 3 at the Congrès Convention
Center in Grand Front Osaka.
Approximately 230 participants joined the seminar both in
person and online. The program was conducted in a lecture
format, and a networking session was held afterward for
in-person attendees. This session provided opportunities for
participants and speakers to exchange ideas, creating a space
for deeper dialogue based on the insights gained during the
seminar.
The seminar began with a sense of urgency: the concern that we
may not be able to leave a better global environment for the
children who will shape the future society. Following
presentations by experts on current initiatives and goals, a
youth representative raised questions and concerns about the
future, creating a shared space for reflection. The seminar
aimed to help individuals and organizations recognize this
urgency and consider the importance of prompt behavioral
change toward sustainability. Leveraging the momentum of Expo
2025, this initiative from Osaka—where awareness of
sustainability is growing across generations, nationalities,
and sectors—proved to be socially meaningful.
Outcomes
High Participant Satisfaction
Survey results showed that the majority of attendees rated the
seminar as “very satisfying” or “satisfying.” The theme,
program structure, and expert presentations were particularly
well received, meeting participants’ expectations.
Provision of New Perspectives
The seminar introduced the sustainability initiatives of the
Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition. Participants
gained insights into the underlying philosophy and practical
efforts behind the Expo’s operations—information not typically
accessible to general visitors. By also showcasing pioneering
corporate case studies, the seminar offered participants with
an opportunity to gain new perspectives and ideas for putting
sustainability into practice.
Deepened Intergenerational Dialogue
A presentation by a youth representative highlighted
sustainability challenges from the perspective of future
generations. Through thought-provoking questions, the
discussion brought out essential issues, and experts provided
structured and insightful opinions based on the underlying
context of the challenges. This intergenerational exchange
helped participants take sustainability as a renewed
opportunity to reflect on it as a personal matter.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
The coming era is expected to face significant
transformations, including climate change, technological
innovation, and the diversification of values. In such a
context, each of us must consider what choices we make, what
actions we take, and what legacies we leave behind for the
next generation. As those holding the baton to the future, we
must embrace the responsibility entrusted to us.
As a leading firm in sustainability, EY is fully aware of its
role and will continue to create value that connects to the
SDGs + Beyond society. We will do so by leveraging scientific
knowledge and cutting-edge technologies, and by collaborating
with businesses, governments, and local communities. Even
after the Expo period concludes, we will maintain our
commitment to practical and cooperative actions aimed at
building a sustainable society.
