【Reflection】
The session “Development of Medical Education in Kyrgyzstan in
the Context of the SDGs” held under SDGs + Beyond: Future
Society for Life Week at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, highlighted
how medical education reform serves as a foundation for
sustainable and resilient health systems. Representing the
Kyrgyz Republic, Prof. Dr. Keneshbek Yrysov, Vice-Rector of
the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), presented an
extensive overview of the country’s higher medical education
landscape, underlining its mission to meet society’s needs
through quality training, research, and clinical practice.
Established in 1939, KSMA now educates more than 12,000
students, including 3,300 international learners, and
integrates continuous learning, inclusivity for students with
disabilities, and simulation-based training into its system.
Its vision reflects a clear alignment with SDG 3 (Good Health
and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through
innovation and international collaboration.
Following this, Dr. Naoya Ikeda, Director of Kiwa Hospital in
Japan, presented pioneering techniques in sustainable breast
cancer surgery—particularly the Total Sealing Technique
(TST)—that significantly reduce postoperative complications
such as lymphoedema. His work demonstrated how innovation in
surgical practice can directly contribute to cost efficiency,
improved patient quality of life, and the reduction of
healthcare inequalities, embodying SDG 3 in clinical
innovation.
Ms. Kanako Ono, from Dr. Recella Group, explored the
intersection of beauty, health, and environmental
sustainability, linking responsible corporate strategy with
human well-being. Ms. Aizada Arzymatova, CEO of MedPharm
Consulting, addressed the economic and policy aspects,
emphasizing investment opportunities in Kyrgyzstan’s
pharmaceutical sector and the vital role of private–public
partnerships for sustainable growth.
Together, the speakers illustrated a multidimensional
approach—spanning education, technology, entrepreneurship, and
healthcare equity—that positions Kyrgyzstan and its partners
as contributors to a healthier, more inclusive future. The
session embodied Expo 2025’s core ethos of connecting
knowledge and practice beyond borders to reimagine health and
education for sustainable development.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Building on the dialogue at Expo 2025, the Kyrgyz State
Medical Academy aims to strengthen international academic
mobility, joint research projects, and digital transformation
in medical education through e-learning and simulation
technologies. Collaborative initiatives with Japanese
institutions, such as Kiwa Hospital, are expected to advance
surgical innovation and clinical training exchanges, fostering
practical implementation of sustainable medical solutions.
MedPharm Consulting plans to expand investment cooperation in
Kyrgyzstan’s pharmaceutical and healthcare industries,
creating opportunities for green and socially responsible
businesses. Dr. Recella Group will continue integrating
sustainability into healthcare and lifestyle sectors,
promoting well-being through ethical corporate engagement.
Future efforts will also focus on enhancing gender equality,
inclusive training, and rural medical education, ensuring that
no community is left behind. By aligning education,
innovation, and investment, these initiatives seek to
transform Expo 2025’s discussions into long-term partnerships
that contribute tangibly to the Sustainable Development Goals
and a resilient, people-centred health system for the region.
