【Reflection】
The “Future of Transport Exhibition” provided an opportunity
to reflect on the pioneering transport technologies of the
United Kingdom from the 19th to the 20th century, while also
exploring emerging innovations shaping the future of mobility.
The highlight of the programme was the “Future of Transport”
symposium held on 15 May, which brought together leading
experts from government, industry and academia to discuss
mobility from multiple perspectives.
Professor Sarah Sharples, Chief Scientific Adviser at the UK
Department for Transport, spoke on how emerging technologies
such as AI, autonomous vehicles, quantum technologies and
engineering biology are transforming transport sustainability
and safety. Mr Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President of
Aston Martin, discussed the evolution of driver experience in
luxury vehicles and its wider technological influence, while
Mr Mark Smedley, Managing Director of Brompton Bicycle (Asia
Pacific), highlighted the role of micro-mobility solutions in
dense urban spaces.
What stood out was the focus not only on technological
advancements, but also on the quality of user experience,
particularly the idea of “the joy of travel” and human-centred
design. This echoes the Japanese concept of enhancing the
“end-to-end journey”, underscoring the value of international
learning and shared knowledge.
At the same time, the discussions made it clear that further
efforts are needed to engage the wider public and to
communicate complex transport issues in more accessible ways,
particularly across diverse regulatory and cultural contexts.
Moving forward, incorporating visitor feedback into exhibition
design and dialogue will be key to ensuring broader impact and
understanding.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Insights from the programme will serve as valuable input for
future transport policy, research and international
collaboration. Notably, the introduction of the Automated
Vehicles Act in the UK in 2024 provided a strong reference
point for other countries exploring the legal frameworks
needed for the implementation of autonomous driving
technologies. It is hoped that this theme will be explored
further through follow-up policy dialogues and business
exchange initiatives.
The symposium also reinforced the importance of
interdisciplinary approaches, involving not only engineering
and AI, but also behavioural science, human-centred design and
urban planning. In response, the UK is considering
strengthening partnerships with universities and research
institutes to support the development of future mobility
talent.
Going forward, the UK aims to create a sustainable and
inclusive transport future by combining science, technology
and creativity. International cooperation and knowledge
sharing will continue to play a central role in achieving this
goal. The technologies and visions showcased in this
exhibition are expected to become a foundation for ongoing
discussions and cooperation beyond the Expo period.
In particular, future collaboration with Japan is seen as a
promising avenue. Through joint research and policy exchange
that draw upon the strengths of both nations, we hope to
co-create a safer, more comfortable and more human-centred
vision for the future of mobility. These efforts will be
supported by expert networks and institutional partnerships
established during the Expo and beyond.

Professor Sarah Sharples FREng
Chief Scientific Adviser at the UK Department for Transport
Professor Sarah Sharples is Chief Scientific Adviser
for the Department for Transport. She is a Professor
of Human Factors in the Faculty of Engineering at the
University of Nottingham and from 2018 to 2021 was Pro
Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
and People. She has led research in transport,
manufacturing and healthcare. Her academic work is
focused on understanding how to design complex systems
that enable both people and technologies to work to
their highest potential. In her DfT role she ensures
that advice to policy makers and politicians is drawn
from the highest quality research from the transport
sector, and works closely with academia and
industry.
She was President of the Chartered Institute of
Ergonomics and Human Factors from 2015 to 2016 and was
