【Reflection】
As the automotive industry undergoes a once-in-a-century
transformation, this roundtable brought together experts from
Japan and Sweden to explore opportunities for collaboration in
the field of mobility. Discussions centered around
next-generation technologies such as Software-Defined Vehicles
(SDVs), connectivity, and autonomous driving.
While both countries share a cultural emphasis on safety and
high quality, participants acknowledged the growing influence
of China and geopolitical risks, emphasizing the need to
balance international cooperation with agile technological
development. Regulatory challenges, including cybersecurity
and data transparency, were also discussed, highlighting the
importance of building mutual trust for future co-creation.
In the afternoon session, real-world examples such as
autonomous shuttles showcased how advanced technologies can
address local challenges in Japan. Experts delivered
multifaceted presentations focused on autonomous driving, AI,
and next-generation materials, followed by dynamic Q&A
sessions. The discussions reaffirmed that the technological
approaches of the Nordic region and Japan are highly
complementary.
With a strong focus on social implementation and user
perspectives, the session fostered meaningful dialogue toward
future public-private-academic collaboration and deeper
bilateral partnerships.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Looking ahead, Japan and Sweden are expected to strengthen
their collaboration in the fields of electrification,
autonomous driving, and digital technologies. Key areas of
focus include joint research and information sharing, the
development of international standards and regulatory
frameworks, and enhanced cybersecurity measures. There is also
strong momentum toward building an open industrial ecosystem
that involves startups, major corporations, and academic
institutions.
This collaborative approach aims to advance a sustainable and
safe mobility society while boosting global competitiveness.
Initiatives are already underway to leverage Sweden’s advanced
testing facilities and to launch pilot projects in Japan’s
regional communities. These include trials related to
autonomous vehicle deployment in rural areas, personalized
safety solutions, and cloud-based fleet management
systems—practical areas where bilateral cooperation is already
taking shape.
Future efforts will also involve partnerships with local
governments in Japan to ensure that these technologies
directly contribute to solving social and regional challenges.
On the human exchange front, a variety of initiatives are
being planned, including reciprocal visits by engineers,
researchers, and policy experts, as well as joint seminars.
These efforts will deepen mutual trust and facilitate
knowledge sharing between the two countries.
The foundation for this growing cooperation was laid during
the roundtable held in the first half of the event, where
Japanese and Swedish experts gathered to openly discuss future
collaboration, with a shared focus on innovation and
sustainability. This session proved instrumental in building
mutual understanding and establishing professional
networks.
In the second half of the program, seminars featured a wide
range of perspectives and cutting-edge technological case
studies. Positive, forward-looking dialogue took place among
participating companies and institutions, further reinforcing
the momentum toward strategic, long-term international
collaboration.
