Reports
【Reflection】
This programme featured a presentation by a representative
from Qatar’s Ministry of Transport. The session offered an
insightful overview of the country's forward-thinking
transport policies and initiatives, with a particular emphasis
on social inclusivity and environmental responsibility. The
presentation attracted considerable interest, especially in
highlighting how future urban transport can be designed to
ensure that no one is left behind.
Central to the discussion was Qatar’s National Transport
Master Plan (TMPQ), which was first formulated in 2008 and has
since been regularly updated in response to evolving social
needs. The 2022 update incorporates a long-term perspective up
to 2050 and includes strategies to support micro-mobility,
pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and other diverse
mobility needs. The presentation also introduced Qatar’s
multi-layered transport network—spanning electric buses,
metro, trams, and airport access systems—which has
successfully enabled safe and comfortable mobility across the
nation.
Particularly noteworthy was the example of the 2022 FIFA World
Cup, during which Qatar implemented flexible commuting times
and temporary traffic zoning measures. These actions
demonstrated the country’s ability to manage large-scale
mobility challenges in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
Overall, the programme conveyed that transport should be
viewed not merely as a means of movement but as a fundamental
part of community life and national development. It presented
a comprehensive approach that resonates with Expo 2025’s core
theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, and
provided participants with valuable insights into the design
of inclusive, forward-looking urban systems.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Qatar’s commitment to sustainable mobility continues beyond
the Expo, with its National Transport Master Plan (TMPQ)
serving as a living framework that evolves in tandem with
urban growth and societal needs. Future updates will further
enhance Qatar’s integrated transport infrastructure, ensuring
that systems remain efficient, inclusive, and adaptable.
The integration of metro, tram, bus, and airport transport
services has already gained international attention as a model
of environmentally conscious and user-friendly urban planning.
Looking ahead, the government plans to expand its efforts to
support active modes of travel—such as walking and cycling—by
enhancing last-mile connectivity, increasing pedestrian
bridges and underpasses, and developing secure, accessible
facilities for bicycles and micro-mobility devices.
Sustainability efforts also include the continued
electrification of public buses, expansion of charging
infrastructure, and promotion of hybrid taxi fleets. Qatar is
preparing to implement AI-driven demand forecasting and
operational planning systems, allowing public transport
services to be more responsive and user-oriented.
Collaboration with educational institutions, the private
sector, and civil society will also play a central role in
shaping a mobility culture that upholds the right to
accessible transport for all. Special attention is being given
to meeting the mobility needs of children, older adults, and
persons with disabilities through inclusive and participatory
design.
The Expo has provided Qatar with a valuable platform to
showcase its vision, and moving forward, the country aims to
deepen its partnerships with the global community. With a
long-term perspective and a commitment to inclusion and
innovation, Qatar continues to strive towards a future where
sustainable, integrated transport systems serve every member
of society.
