Reports
【Reflection】
This programme featured Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Astronaut with
the Australian Space Agency. Katherine is Australia’s first
female astronaut and the first person qualified as an
astronaut under the Australian flag. She provided an overview
of Australia’s historical and ongoing contributions to space
exploration. She traced the Australia’s early achievements,
including the launch of WRESAT-1 in 1967 and its crucial
support of NASA’s Apollo missions, while highlighting
Australia’s present-day strategic role in international space
collaboration. Her personal story served as a powerful symbol
of diversity and opportunity in the space sector, especially
for younger audiences.
The presentation showcased successful joint missions with
Japan, such as the retrieval of the Hayabusa2 capsule and
participation in the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) project.
Additionally, it highlighted Australia’s use of satellite
technology to address pressing global issues, including
climate change, disaster prevention, and environmental
protection. The presentation demonstrated that space directly
impacts our everyday lives and collective future. The
presentation fostered greater public interest and broadened
awareness of space as a tool for sustainable development.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Australia will continue to strengthen its space sector through
international partnerships, technological innovation, and
public engagement. An initiative is the joint development of
the lunar rover “Kangaroo” with NASA, designed to explore the
Moon’s surface and support future long-term human presence.
Australia is also investing in commercial space activities,
including satellite launch services and pharmaceutical
research in space, which are expected to contribute to
economic growth and job creation.
Space technologies are increasingly being used for Earth-based
applications, such as monitoring bushfires, managing floods,
and improving agricultural productivity. These examples
underscore how space can directly contribute to solving global
challenges. Recognising the importance of human capital,
Australia is promoting STEM education and supporting the next
generation of scientists, engineers, and space professionals
through schools and community outreach.
By leveraging the connections established through Expo 2025
and beyond, Australia aims to deepen its role as a
collaborative and responsible leader in the global space
community.
