Reports
【Reflection】
This business forum showcased Indonesia’s natural capital as
one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, highlighting
initiatives that contribute to a green economy and the
creation of a sustainable society.
The event brought together government officials, private
companies, international investors, and environmental NGOs,
fostering multifaceted discussions on promoting investment in
natural capital, innovative financing mechanisms, the
introduction of digital platforms, and the development of
sustainable business models. Notably, the signing of a
memorandum of understanding on climate action between the
Indonesian National Development Planning Agency and the Asian
Investor Group (AIGCC), alongside the official launch of the
digital biodiversity information platform, represents
significant achievements, supporting data-driven
decision-making and investment promotion. The Indonesian
Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD)
encouraged companies to regard biodiversity as a strategic
asset rather than merely a CSR consideration, providing
concrete examples of mobilising private capital through policy
and financial instruments.
Additionally, Conservancy Indonesia demonstrated conservation
models that integrate scientific data with local community
knowledge, and ERM Japan presented proposals for quantitative
evaluation and standardisation of natural capital, offering
participants valuable new insights. Through these discussions,
it became widely recognised that investment in natural capital
is not limited to conservation activities but serves as a
vital tool directly linked to economic growth and climate
resilience.
The existence of Indonesia’s 22 ecosystem types, seven
ecoregions, and untapped genetic resources also highlights
substantial future opportunities for bio-investment,
demonstrating tangible pathways to balance sustainability with
economic development.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following the forum, Indonesia and its international partners
have been actively advancing concrete, long-term initiatives
aimed at achieving sustainable economic growth through
investment in natural capital.
The digital biodiversity information platform is being further
expanded to enable real-time consolidation of data from
national parks and marine protected areas, with the goal of
providing widely accessible information to support
policymaking and private sector investment decisions. This
will strengthen the foundation for investors and companies to
quantitatively assess the value of natural capital and
allocate resources efficiently, while also facilitating the
planning and monitoring of conservation activities in
collaboration with local communities.
Furthermore, innovative financing mechanisms such as debt
swaps, SDG-linked finance, and faith-based funding are being
applied to specific projects, accelerating private investment
and enabling the implementation of biodiversity conservation
and sustainable business initiatives that would be difficult
to achieve through government budgets alone. On the corporate
side, efforts to integrate biodiversity as a strategic asset,
rather than solely as part of CSR, are expanding, with the
social implementation of green bonds and blended finance
enabling a more realistic alignment of economic growth with
environmental protection.
In addition, ERM Japan’s work on natural capital valuation and
standardisation provides a foundation for the proliferation of
investment products and metrics that incorporate natural
capital, creating an environment in which investors can
quantitatively understand natural risks and the value of
biodiversity. Moreover, the expansion of public-private
international partnerships with governments, investors, and
NGOs across the Asia-Pacific region is extending knowledge and
best practice models in natural capital investment, promoting
concrete actions towards sustainable economic growth.
Together, these initiatives are expected to further solidify
the path toward long-term development of Indonesia’s green
economy centred on biodiversity, significantly contributing to
future-oriented sustainability improvements.
