Reports
【Reflection】
The programme organised by Latvia, “How innovations in
aerospace manufacturing can contribute to sustainability and
environmental preservation”, brought together government
representatives, scientists, and entrepreneurs to explore the
transformative potential of aerospace technologies for
addressing global sustainability challenges. The session began
with welcome remarks by H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms.
Baiba Braze, highlighting Latvia’s commitment to advancing
environmentally responsible innovation in collaboration with
international partners.
The subsequent presentations demonstrated a rich diversity of
perspectives. Mr. Yasunori Yamazaki (Yasu), Co-Founder and CEO
of LIBERATECH SPACE, introduced “The Earth Intelligence”,
emphasising how data from space can support climate monitoring
and policy action. His remarks underscored the role of
satellite intelligence in bridging scientific insights with
practical applications for environmental preservation.
Dr. Ugis Cabulis of the Latvian State Institute of Wood
Chemistry then presented research on cryogenic insulation
aligned with European Green Deal priorities. His technical
contribution showed how advances in material science,
particularly sustainable insulation for space launchers and
civil aviation, can reduce energy consumption and enhance
efficiency in aerospace systems.
Equally compelling was Mr. Dmitry Chulkov from NewBaseCam Ltd,
who described stabilised aerial monitoring solutions. His
presentation highlighted how innovative aerial platforms can
support real-time environmental observation, natural disaster
response, and agricultural management, demonstrating a direct
impact on society and ecosystems.
The panel discussion, “Vision from Space, Foundation from
Finance”, connected these technological innovations with
financial mechanisms, pointing out the importance of
cross-sectoral cooperation between Latvia, Japan, and the
wider global community. Finally, Ms. Solvita Gulbe from the
Investment and Development Agency of Latvia provided a
strategic overview of Latvia’s business environment, noting
its competitive advantages for foreign investors interested in
aerospace and green technologies.
Altogether, the programme illustrated how aerospace innovation
can extend far beyond space exploration to become a key driver
of sustainability and international collaboration.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
Following Expo 2025, Latvia and its partners have clear
opportunities to transform the discussions of this programme
into concrete initiatives. First, collaboration on
satellite-based Earth intelligence can be deepened by
establishing joint projects between Japanese and Latvian
companies, with a focus on monitoring climate change impacts
such as deforestation, ocean health, and urban emissions.
Developing a shared data platform accessible to policymakers
and researchers could ensure that insights from aerospace
technology inform sustainable development decisions.
Second, the research on cryogenic insulation opens avenues for
pilot projects that integrate sustainable materials into both
aerospace and civil aviation sectors. Post-Expo, Latvia could
seek partnerships with Japanese universities and manufacturers
to scale prototypes into commercially viable products,
aligning with global aviation decarbonisation goals.
Third, aerial monitoring technologies such as those presented
by NewBaseCam Ltd can be applied in practical cooperation
projects with Japanese municipalities, especially in
disaster-prone areas. Demonstration projects could highlight
the use of stabilised aerial systems for real-time disaster
risk management, precision agriculture, and coastal
protection.
Finally, Latvia’s investment environment, as described by the
Investment and Development Agency, provides a gateway for
Japanese and other international firms to establish R&D
centres or production bases. By positioning itself as a hub
for green aerospace technologies, Latvia can extend the Expo
momentum into long-term economic partnerships.
In conclusion, the post-Expo phase should focus on translating
the spirit of innovation and collaboration showcased in Osaka
into tangible cross-border projects that strengthen
sustainability, economic development, and international trust.
