Programme details
The 7th International Conference on Carbon Recycling, to be held for the first time in Osaka, will bring together stakeholders from industry, academia, and government. Participants will confirm the initiatives of each country in connection with technology development/demonstration toward the future social implementation of Carbon Recycling, which is a key to achieving carbon neutrality. The conference will also discuss ways to strengthen international cooperation among countries. On the day of the event, we will also hold a poster session and provide opportunities for networking (limited to in-person participants at the actual venue), so please take advantage of these opportunities for interaction. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there!
Reports
【Reflection】
The International Conference on Carbon Recycling is an
international forum aimed at reaffirming the commitment of
participating countries to the development and demonstration
of carbon recycling technologies, which are recognized as key
to achieving carbon neutrality, with a view to their future
social implementation, and at strengthening cooperative
relationships among countries.
At this seventh conference, panel discussions were held on the
following themes: [i] cooperation on carbon recycling to
contribute to CO2 reductions across industrial society, [ii]
pathways of carbon recycling technologies towards 2030, and
[iii] business models for forming the carbon recycling
market.
The conference reaffirmed the importance of promoting the
development of carbon recycling technologies to create markets
through cost reduction and visualization of environmental
value, while also emphasizing the need to establish systems
for appropriately evaluating such environmental value and to
enhance international collaboration in sharing technologies,
funding, and expertise. Furthermore, the conference discussed
the importance of expanding the production scale, lowering the
procurement cost of CO2 as a raw material, and improving
efficiency throughout the entire supply chain as specific
measures for cost reduction, as well as the essential need to
reduce initial investment and operational costs to build
sustainable business models, which are crucial for the social
implementation of carbon recycling.
As a side event, a networking occasion was held between
Japanese university students and international experts to
foster the next generation of carbon recycling leaders. A
poster exhibition was also organized to showcase Japan’s
industry-academia-government initiatives in CCU/carbon
recycling technologies to the global audience.
Japan will continue to accelerate efforts to strengthen
international cooperation toward the social implementation of
carbon recycling, which is essential for achieving carbon
neutrality.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
To disseminate carbon recycling technology, METI and NEDO will
promote the development and demonstration of new CO2
separation and capture methods that lead to cost reduction.
Additionally, we will advance the development of technologies
to stably fix CO2 captured from factories and other sources
into concrete.
Carbon recycling product is now more expensive compared to
conventional product. To create its market, it is essential to
make their environmental value visible and establish a system
that encourages demand-side preferences for products with high
environmental value.
We will develop GHG counting rule for carbon recycling
activities under the legal reporting system. Additionally, the
Japanese government will actively use carbon recycled products
with high environmental value in public procurement.
