Programme details

The Kyoto Conference will convene some of the world's leading philosophers, scientists, business leaders, engineers, artists, and religious figures to engage collaboratively in meaningful dialogues concerning the fundamental nature of “values and underlying principles” in an era defined by artificial intelligence (AI). As humanity faces the challenges of rapid technological evolution, the conference seeks to offer an opportunity to reassess these core values while encouraging a cross-disciplinary exchange that transcends conventional boundaries.

Reports

【Reflection】
The 1st Kyoto Conference brought together a total of about 300 participants from 18 countries, including leaders from industry, academia, government, and religious communities, under the theme “Realizing a Multilayered Society of Values.”
Co-hosted by Kyoto University and held at the Kyoto International Conference Center, the event was supported by Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as Kyoto Prefecture and Kyoto City.
It also attracted strong media attention, with 53 journalists from 15 media organizations covering the sessions, resulting in wide post-event coverage across major newspapers and broadcasts.
Through this, the conference successfully established itself as a high-profile international forum that connects philosophical inquiry with practical challenges across society.

【Post EXPO Initiatives】
After the conclusion of the first Kyoto Conference, we intend to build upon the momentum it has generated and further amplify it by embracing the concept of a “Network of Networks,” one of the key themes of the conference. Our aim is to foster the creation of an international movement dedicated to realizing a value-multilayered society.

Specifically, we plan to expand networks across academia and industry both in Japan and abroad by leveraging our collaboration with the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator Foundation (GESDA)—a Switzerland-based organization with which we signed a memorandum of understanding during the conference—as well as Kyoto University’s global network. Furthermore, to strengthen engagement with regions such as South America, which were not represented at the first conference, we are planning “meet-and-greet” events to promote and deepen the understanding of the concept of a value-multilayered society that we aspire to advance.

At the Second Kyoto Conference (scheduled for 2027), we plan to consolidate these intellectual and practical achievements and present them to the world in the form of a “Kyoto Declaration.” The drafting process of this declaration will also involve distinguished experts from Japan and abroad, further contributing to the formation of this international movement.
