Programme details
This conference will feature speakers who have made significant contributions to global environmental conservation and have been inducted into the Kyoto Global Environment Hall of Fame. It will also host a panel discussion on solving global environmental issues in Kyoto, the birthplace of the Kyoto Protocol, which for the first time internationally imposed obligations on developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, students who have explored the relationship between Kyoto's 1,200-year-old traditional culture and its natural environment will present their “Proposals for the Future” aimed at addressing future global environmental issues.

【Reflection】
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol's
entry into force, and under the theme of the Osaka-Kansai
Expo, “Designing a Future Society Where Life Shines”, The
Earth Hall of Fame KYOTO, International Conference / Future
Forum was held. This event featured young people who had
explored the relationship between the natural environment and
Kyoto culture at the Future Forum delivering a “Commitment for
the Future” to the world. It also included discussions on
themes such as “Climate Change” and “Biological and Cultural
Diversity” between past inductees into the Earth Hall of Fame
KYOTO and young people.
On that day, 1,100 attendees were coming, we could provide a
significant opportunity to showcase Kyoto as a global leader
in environmental innovation.
The event commenced with traditional cultural and performing
arts presentations by members of the Do You KYOTO? Network.
This was followed by opening remarks from the organisers,
followed by the screening of a video message for the future
from Professor Shukuro Manabe (first inductee into the Earth
Hall of Fame KYOTO), winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in
Physics.
After that, Professor Juichi Yamagiwa, Chairman of The Earth
Hall of Fame KYOTO, did a keynote lecture on the theme of
‘Japan Environmental Studies’. This was followed by a special
dialogue between quiz player Takushi Izawa and Professor
Juichi Yamagiwa.
Subsequently, as part of the Future Forum,43 out of 106 high
school and university students—who had explored the
relationship between the natural environment and Kyoto culture
across various locations within the prefecture from May to
August this year—presented a “Commitment for the Future”. This
Commitment was based on the learning and insights gained from
their research activities.
Through the Future Forum, young people deepened their
understanding of global environmental conservation.
Additionally, the panel discussion featured themes of “Climate
Change” and “Biological and Cultural Diversity”, with the
inductees,Ego Lemos (10th), Ms Keiko Nakamura (14th), and Ms
Mikiko Kainuma (15th), and leading authority like Mr Takushi
Izawa, and students was conducted.
Through this panel discussion, the importance of environmental
conservation was transmitted to the world.
Finally, Mr Ego Lemos performed his original song “Let's
Fix the Earth”, with the chorus sung in unison by the speakers
and attendees, their hearts as one.
【Post EXPO Initiatives】
“Future Form” implemented as our first initiative this year,
surveys for participants revealed strong expectations for
continuing fieldwork that allow direct engagement with
on-the-ground perspectives and current realities.
Furthermore, considering global issues such as advancing
climate change, we believe there remains a need for
initiatives that nurture the inquisitive spirit of young
people who will lead the next generation and cultivate future
environmental leaders.
Therefore, moving forward, the Earth Hall of Fame KYOTO will
take over the ‘Commitment for the Future’ as its legacy. We
will persist in providing opportunities for young people to
explore and present their findings on the coexistence and
harmony between culture and diverse natural environments.
Furthermore, we will continue to consult with members of the
executive committee and other stakeholders to make these
explorations more meaningful for participants.

Eugenio ‘Ego’ Lemos
CEO of Permatil and Goodwill Ambassador for Culture, Environment and Water Resources of Timor-Leste
A member of the National Curriculum Development Advisory Team of the Ministry of Education of East Timor, and a world-renowned singer-songwriter. As part of the education system for children in East Timor, he is involved in the design and promotion of a permaculture garden and planting water system, which serve as a laboratory for applying real-life skills within schools.

Izawa Takushi
